Barbara Ryan enjoying some Plein Air Painting in Middletown, Connecticut

Barbara Ryan's formal art education began at Middlesex Community-Technical College, where she received a degree in Fine Arts, graduating summa cum laude. She has since taken classes and workshops in drawing, pastels, and oil and watercolor painting with John Bickford, Bruce Raven, Ellie Bender, Terry Oakes Bourret and other Connecticut artists.

Ryan has exhibited in juried shows in Washington Square, New York City, and in Mystic and Old Saybrook, Connecticut, as well as in many local exhibits organized by the Art Guild of Middletown (which she served as president) and the Arts and Crafts Association of Meriden (Gallery 53). She is also a member of the East Hampton Art Association, the Lyme Art Association, the Connecticut Pastel Society and the New Britain Museum of American Art.

Her paintings are in numerous private collections and in the permanent collection of Middlesex College.

Before moving to Durham from New York City, Ryan received a B.A. in history, graduating summa cum laude from Hunter College, New York. She did graduate work in history at Columbia University and in psychology at the New School for Social Research. She maintains an editorial service firm in Durham. In January 2002, she was named director of Gallery 53, 53 Colony Street, Meriden.
